The world’s data centers are working to adopt Software Defined Infrastructure (SDI) – but they are far from reaching their goals. The single biggest challenge in SDI is achieving interoperability between many kinds of hardware. Without that, a data center’s systems become a Tower of Babel, preventing IT system admins from seeing a unified view of all resources – and managing them. Built to leverage virtualized infrastructure, SDI will be easier to achieve if there are more bridges between platforms – leading to better management. This blog focuses on an emerging management standard called Redfish, which is designed to help make...

The world of analytics is expanding – and the complexity is expanding right along with it. Data is stored in distributed file systems, on clustered server nodes, and on scale-up systems. It may be structured, or unstructured, data. And, applications that access the data can be written to run on physical servers, virtual servers (VMs), or containers. The result is a rapidly growing, complex environment for customers. IBM’s approach to addressing these customer issues is to provide a new generation of advanced resource-management IBM Spectrum Computing software that supports software-defined infrastructure (SDI). The SDI functionality abstracts the control plane away from...

The OpenPOWER consortium, which met in San Jose, CA, last month, identified key workloads that have an affinity to the IBM POWER processor’s capabilities. Following its founding in 2013, and more than two years into organizing a worldwide consortium, more than 200 members have joined the OpenPOWER Foundation. Last year’s Summit had 15 products based on OpenPOWER; this year’s had 59. The growing ecosystem shed light on the deployment use cases for OpenPOWER, which leverages IBM’s multi-core RISC processor for a variety of demanding workloads. Three things drew the consortium together: Leveraging IBM’s POWER chip designs, including eight-threaded processing, for scale-out...

Why SDI Will Rock Digital Transformation

Posted by on in Data Center
Digital transformation enables organizations to leverage their structured and unstructured data with advanced analytics and machine learning, in the form of cognitive computing, to anticipate and respond to business shifts. This gives businesses the IT flexibility, and the business agility, to deal with changing business conditions. IBM’s InterConnect Conference in Las Vegas focused on digital transformation, which leverages hybrid cloud services to deliver advanced data services to business end-users. In an age when the focus is focused on software and cloud, it’s important to note that a new generation of software-enabled hardware infrastructure (SDI) is increasingly taking center stage. It will...
