IBM Systems’ year-end report to analysts was remarkable in the way that it positioned distributed computing, supporting hybrid cloud and analytics, as an important key to the company’s overall systems strategy. It is also vital for growing installations of IBM hardware and software, and expanding into new accounts. IBM has long been involved in scale-up and scale-out computing, but its brand is often associated with traditional scale-up systems and storage for data centers. This year-end report showed how the portfolio, as a whole, enables distributed computing and scale-out computing, to support hybrid cloud, analytics and cognitive computing. With this approach, IBM’s...

Data gravity is becoming an ever-more-powerful force in data center environments. In this view, it makes more sense to analyze data where it has the greatest density – which is often in on-premises databases or data repositories. This “data gravity” perspective is all about a new option to aggregate data in a cloud provider’s infrastructure, allowing it to scale to the petabyte stage, and analyzing that large dataset using high-bandwidth, low-latency fabrics.   The term “data gravity” was coined by Dave McCrory two years ago, based on the physics of gravitation. McCrory, who had worked at VMware and Cloud Foundry, started...

Ten years after Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched its first Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service, AWS is providing a world-wide “snapshot” of the state of customer adoption. AWS executives are traveling around the globe, hosting 30+ free Summits to attract prospective and current customers, in a year-long effort. This format is revealing more detail about the full portfolio of 70+ services AWS now offers to customers – such as database services, advanced analytics, and management services. That adds more context to the initial offer of less expensive compute and storage, first heard 10 years ago. At the Summit, Dr. Matt Wood,...

Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Internet of Things (IoT) solution gained attention at the HPE Discover 2016 conference in June by leveraging HPE’s converged technology in systems designed for IoT data collection and analytics. Details about the announcement can be seen here. HPE sees IoT – and the new IoT edge servers – as an important avenue for expanding its server business.  Use-case examples for this category of edge servers include analyzing the sensor data generated in retail, manufacturing, oil/gas, health care, transportation and engineering. Scenarios include failure prediction, machine learning, preventative maintenance, and real-time monitoring of industrial processes and manufacturing devices....

IBM’s public discussion of its POWER processor roadmap shows that there will be scale-out and scale-up versions, starting with POWER9 in 2017. Key workloads for POWER9 will include cloud computing, visualization and HPC for scale-out servers, and transactional workloads and advanced Big Data analytics for scale-up servers. The scale-out versions will support intensive cloud computing from hyperscale cloud providers like Google and Rackspace, both of which are active members of the OpenPOWER Foundation, and both companies have said they will leverage POWER processors as part of their datacenter infrastructure. The scale-up versions will support enterprise on-prem computing, including traditional transactional and...

As the OpenStack Foundation's twice-annual conference returned to its roots in Austin, Texas, the focus of the OpenStack 2016 conference was integration into mainstream IT. The rapid increase in hybrid clouds is creating demand for OpenStack-based software that can be supported by a broader group of enterprise platform vendors – most of which are openly supporting OpenStack APIs for interoperability between clouds. The presence of 7,500 attendees at the Austin conference underscores the broad interest in adopting OpenStack for multi-cloud deployments. Much of the discussion centered on the challenges of hybrid computing – with workloads spanning enterprise data centers and cloud service providers’...

I recently had the opportunity to visit Jabil’s Blue Sky Innovation Center in San Jose. It is an amazing place with an ambiance that feels open, inviting and on the cutting-edge of innovation. But beyond how it looks, I was intrigued by the focus of the campus. The idea behind Blue Sky is to provide an environment where Jabil’s customers can collaborate with each other and Jabil to add new and innovative capabilities to their products. Jabil began as an electronics contract manufacturer but has evolved to support the entire product lifecycle. The company offers services from designing product packaging to...
