Security and availability are top-of-mind IT concerns about enterprise clouds – and transferring enterprise workloads to hybrid clouds. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – security and availability are not going away just because we’re in the age of cloud computing. Rather, customers must evaluate their on-premises requirements for both security and availability -- and they must take steps to match those levels throughout the hybrid cloud, working together with their cloud service providers (CSPs). Security must be assured for all workloads and data. That can be achieved by means of encryption and user authentication – and by...

With the growing importance of data analytics, businesses are discovering that they must walk a fine line  in how they handle and manage customer data. Data privacy both  from both regulatory and reputational standpoints is requiring companies to move cautiously. The latest round of regulations, including the EU’s GDPR, comes with stiff financial penalties for those that fail to comply. Companies that fail to adequately prepare for the GDPR risk incurring fines of up to 4 percent of their annual revenue. Maybe I have been around the technology market too long but it appears to me that there is nothing new under the sun. The foundational technologies that are the rage today all have their roots in technology that has been around for decades. That is actually a good thing. Simply put, a unique technology concept often will not be commercially viable for at least a decade. So, as I look into 2012, it is clear to me that we are at a tipping point where technologies that have been incubating for many years are customer requirements. Some, like cloud computing are...

I recently spoke with a CIO of a large and highly regulated organization about his company’s experiences with cloud computing. Security and compliance issues are top priorities for this CIO causing the company's leadership to move with caution into the cloud. He expects that all cloud implementations throughout the enterprise – from Software as a Service (SaaS) to Infrastructure as a Service  (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) will receive prior approval from his office. This CIO is implementing the same approach to security and compliance that he has taken with every project undertaken within the company. In other words,...
