Can IBM Take Machine Learning Mainstream?

Posted by on in IBM
It is clear that Watson, IBM’s cognitive engine, is becoming embedded in just about every tool and application that IBM is selling these days. In its most recent announcement, IBM is now making the Watson Machine Learning (ML) engine available on the mainframe in order to bring machine learning to transactional databases. This ML engine will be available both for on premises use and as a private Cloud implementation. IBM’s announcement had a vast array of capabilities too numerous to mention in a single blog, I would like to mention some of the aspects that I found especially important. The...

I had the opportunity to attend the National Retail Federation Conference this year. Attending sessions and meeting with a variety of retailers and technology vendors I came away with some observations about the requirements for retailers in the future to be successful. My overriding observation is that retailers who are successful in the future will be those companies that are able to get creative in their use of technology. Retailers need to focus on the intersection of cloud, analytics, customer experience, and security. It is a difficult challenge. First, margins for retailers are quite low so that investing in technology...

The world of analytics is expanding – and the complexity is expanding right along with it. Data is stored in distributed file systems, on clustered server nodes, and on scale-up systems. It may be structured, or unstructured, data. And, applications that access the data can be written to run on physical servers, virtual servers (VMs), or containers. The result is a rapidly growing, complex environment for customers. IBM’s approach to addressing these customer issues is to provide a new generation of advanced resource-management IBM Spectrum Computing software that supports software-defined infrastructure (SDI). The SDI functionality abstracts the control plane away from...

I guess that I have been in this technology industry for too long. Like many of my colleagues, I love new technology and I thrive on change and emerging trends. In fact, the technology market thrives on change and the latest innovation that promises to turn an also ran company into a market disruptor. The reality is that many of these shiny new toys or technology innovations fail – sometimes almost unnoticed and sometimes with a bang. In my business book, Smart or Lucky? How Technology Leaders Turn Chance into Success, I devote an entire chapter on what I call “Silver...

Earlier this year I co-authored a book on Cognitive Computing. It is a complex topic because it requires that practitioners change the way they go about building applications and creating value for their companies.  Cognitive computing is not a single technology or a single market. Rather it is an approach to solving problems by leading with data. This means that rather than creating all the logic first and flowing data into a solution, you begin by analyzing the data to determine the patterns in that data. As more data is added, the cognitive system gets smarter and adapts to this...

Before I start with my predictions, let me explain what I mean by a prediction. I believe that predictions should not be about the end of a technology cycle but the timing for when a issue begins to gain traction that will result in industry shifts.  As I pointed out in my book, Smart or Lucky? How Technology Leaders Turn Change Into Success (Josey Bass, 2011), important industry initiatives and changes usually require decades of trial and error before they result in significant product and important trends.  So, in my predictions, I am pointing out changes that are starting. a know...

My top seven predictions for 2014

Posted by on in Cloud Computing
In December, like everyone else, I decided to present my predictions for 2014. I didn’t publish my predictions in an article or blog. Rather, I decided to experiment. Over a number of days I tweeted my predictions. It was an interesting process. I could avoid the problem of getting too busy and not getting around to finishing the blog. How as my experience? I’d say it was mixed. On the positive side, I continued to tweet ideas as they came into my mind, rather than trying to sit down and come up with my top predictions all at once. On...

The Emergence of Big Data Security Intelligence

Posted by on in Security
What's Driving Big Data Security Intelligence? There is a new generation of security offerings that can anticipate threats and prevent them in real-time.  This new generation of offerings is emerging because of an increase level of risk.  Traditionally, security systems have worked by collecting and analyzing logs and then setting alerts to trigger action when activity falls outside of a specified pattern.  This approach  no longer satisfies the security needs of many organizations.  There are an increasing number of  newer threats, such as Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) that are designed to look like normal system traffic and often do not trigger...
