Before I start with my predictions, let me explain what I mean by a prediction. I believe that predictions should not be about the end of a technology cycle but the timing for when a issue begins to gain traction that will result in industry shifts.  As I pointed out in my book, Smart or Lucky? How Technology Leaders Turn Change Into Success (Josey Bass, 2011), important industry initiatives and changes usually require decades of trial and error before they result in significant product and important trends.  So, in my predictions, I am pointing out changes that are starting. a know...

VMware, known for its software stack for virtualized environments, showed its expanded ecosystem at VMworld 2016 in Las Vegas. It has made a decided effort to reach into mixed-vendor deployments in virtualized x86 infrastructure – and to connect with other vendor’s public clouds, starting with IBM’s SoftLayer. The company with the largest installed base of virtualized x86 infrastructure is moving, in multiple ways, to grow its total available market (TAM), even as its corporate parent, EMC, merges into Dell Technologies. Significantly, it highlighted its connections with open-source technologies that drive many of the cloud computing deployments, both in enterprise data...

The new Dell Technologies stepped onto the worldwide stage last week (week of Sept. 7, 2016), bringing with it a new “take” on how to do IT services in the cloud computing world. The newly formed Dell Technologies services group, Dell EMC Services has a new mission: It will provide strategic advice and guidance for building out new infrastructure related to cloud and hybrid cloud. Dell Technologies CEO Michael Dell and Dell EMC president David Goulden said the new combined company will help customers to consolidate traditional IT infrastructure – even as they also help customers modernize and expand their use...

Oracle Corp. is introducing new SPARC processors to support scale-out cloud computing, just as many of its customers are looking to migrate some of their workloads to hybrid clouds. The new Oracle S7 processors, which are the processing engines on Oracle’s engineered systems, enable fast analytics and data security – supporting both of these chief features with on-chip, built-in acceleration technology.   End-to-end Computing for Hybrid Clouds End-to-end computing is key to the new S7-based systems, because they support the same Solaris/SPARC workloads that run on the Oracle SPARC M7-based systems, introduced in 2015. For purposes of consistency and compatibility,  Oracle...

Data gravity is becoming an ever-more-powerful force in data center environments. In this view, it makes more sense to analyze data where it has the greatest density – which is often in on-premises databases or data repositories. This “data gravity” perspective is all about a new option to aggregate data in a cloud provider’s infrastructure, allowing it to scale to the petabyte stage, and analyzing that large dataset using high-bandwidth, low-latency fabrics.   The term “data gravity” was coined by Dave McCrory two years ago, based on the physics of gravitation. McCrory, who had worked at VMware and Cloud Foundry, started...

Ten years after Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched its first Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service, AWS is providing a world-wide “snapshot” of the state of customer adoption. AWS executives are traveling around the globe, hosting 30+ free Summits to attract prospective and current customers, in a year-long effort. This format is revealing more detail about the full portfolio of 70+ services AWS now offers to customers – such as database services, advanced analytics, and management services. That adds more context to the initial offer of less expensive compute and storage, first heard 10 years ago. At the Summit, Dr. Matt Wood,...

Over the past several weeks I have had some conversations with a new division of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) that is offering digital software and solutions with a strong focus on data integration. While TCS itself provides solutions to customers through its consulting services, this new business unit is creating a self-sustaining organization based on analytics of customer and urban data. Where does Digital Software and Solutions fit? But first a little context. Tata Consultancy Services is a major business unit within the larger Tata Corporation. Like many multi-national companies, Tata offers a wide variety of products and services...

IBM’s journey to the cloud has been a complicated process. As an analyst, I have had a bird’s eye view of the evolution of IBM’s cloud strategy. Like many other enterprise technology companies, IBM has had to balance its need to preserve on- premises revenue with its desire to satisfy customers’ demands for cloud services. I recently attended IBM’s cloud analyst summit, where key executives put the evolving IBM cloud strategy into perspective. In the midst of massive changes in technology and customer requirements, Robert LeBlanc, Senior Vice President and leader of the cloud strategy, succinctly stated the overarching strategy:...
