Data integration from multiple security point-products is a real problem for many enterprise customers. There are too many threat intelligence feeds – and no easy way to view all incoming data in a contextual way that facilitates interpretation, analysis, and remediation. Therefore, knocking down your organization’s in-house security software silos may become an essential element to improving your cybersecurity profile. Cybersecurity relies on tools to identify an increasing number of threats. However, the proliferation of security point products slows down the ability of organizations to identify threats and respond. For many customers, there is too much input, from too many sources –...

I had the opportunity to attend the National Retail Federation Conference this year. Attending sessions and meeting with a variety of retailers and technology vendors I came away with some observations about the requirements for retailers in the future to be successful. My overriding observation is that retailers who are successful in the future will be those companies that are able to get creative in their use of technology. Retailers need to focus on the intersection of cloud, analytics, customer experience, and security. It is a difficult challenge. First, margins for retailers are quite low so that investing in technology...

Security and availability are top-of-mind IT concerns about enterprise clouds – and transferring enterprise workloads to hybrid clouds. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – security and availability are not going away just because we’re in the age of cloud computing. Rather, customers must evaluate their on-premises requirements for both security and availability -- and they must take steps to match those levels throughout the hybrid cloud, working together with their cloud service providers (CSPs). Security must be assured for all workloads and data. That can be achieved by means of encryption and user authentication – and by...

With the growing importance of data analytics, businesses are discovering that they must walk a fine line  in how they handle and manage customer data. Data privacy both  from both regulatory and reputational standpoints is requiring companies to move cautiously. The latest round of regulations, including the EU’s GDPR, comes with stiff financial penalties for those that fail to comply. Companies that fail to adequately prepare for the GDPR risk incurring fines of up to 4 percent of their annual revenue. As a result, organizations around the world are scrambling to address the new rules before the GDPR goes into effect...

Oracle Corp. is introducing new SPARC processors to support scale-out cloud computing, just as many of its customers are looking to migrate some of their workloads to hybrid clouds. The new Oracle S7 processors, which are the processing engines on Oracle’s engineered systems, enable fast analytics and data security – supporting both of these chief features with on-chip, built-in acceleration technology.   End-to-end Computing for Hybrid Clouds End-to-end computing is key to the new S7-based systems, because they support the same Solaris/SPARC workloads that run on the Oracle SPARC M7-based systems, introduced in 2015. For purposes of consistency and compatibility,  Oracle...

Ten years after Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched its first Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) service, AWS is providing a world-wide “snapshot” of the state of customer adoption. AWS executives are traveling around the globe, hosting 30+ free Summits to attract prospective and current customers, in a year-long effort. This format is revealing more detail about the full portfolio of 70+ services AWS now offers to customers – such as database services, advanced analytics, and management services. That adds more context to the initial offer of less expensive compute and storage, first heard 10 years ago. At the Summit, Dr. Matt Wood,...

As the OpenStack Foundation's twice-annual conference returned to its roots in Austin, Texas, the focus of the OpenStack 2016 conference was integration into mainstream IT. The rapid increase in hybrid clouds is creating demand for OpenStack-based software that can be supported by a broader group of enterprise platform vendors – most of which are openly supporting OpenStack APIs for interoperability between clouds. The presence of 7,500 attendees at the Austin conference underscores the broad interest in adopting OpenStack for multi-cloud deployments. Much of the discussion centered on the challenges of hybrid computing – with workloads spanning enterprise data centers and cloud service providers’...
