Hewlett Packard Enterprise’s Internet of Things (IoT) solution gained attention at the HPE Discover 2016 conference in June by leveraging HPE’s converged technology in systems designed for IoT data collection and analytics. Details about the announcement can be seen here. HPE sees IoT – and the new IoT edge servers – as an important avenue for expanding its server business.  Use-case examples for this category of edge servers include analyzing the sensor data generated in retail, manufacturing, oil/gas, health care, transportation and engineering. We can all agree that IoT has become a hot topic with IT and business leaders. Why is there so much interest and excitement around IoT? I guess that I have been in this technology industry for too long. Like many of my colleagues, I love new technology and I thrive on change and emerging trends. In fact, the technology market thrives on change and the latest innovation that promises to turn an also ran company into a market disruptor. The reality is that many of these shiny new toys or technology innovations fail – sometimes almost unnoticed and sometimes with a bang. In my business book, Smart or Lucky? In a recent Hurwitz survey of companies building IoT solutions, one key finding made a big impression on me: More than 90% of respondents work with one or more partners to develop and manufacture their IoT solutions. Looking deeper into the survey findings, I could find many reasons why companies are finding partnerships essential to their IoT projects. One of the most significant reasons is that most companies entering into the IoT market need to redefine their traditional manufacturing processes. This requires innovation at fast speeds in order to achieve first-to-market advantage. Therefore, partnering with an organization that already has experience...

I had a very interesting discussion the other day with an executive for a technology company. He had just come from a presentation about the Internet of Things (IoT) market. The presenter projected that the market would be valued at around $7 Trillion market within the next decade. What did I think about this projection? Is it correct? Is this the true size of the market? Now, as a disclaimer, I don’t do market sizing. I assume that those smart people who figure out how big or small a market will be use sound judgment. However, I don’t think that...
